New ESA astronauts report for training

ESA’s six new astronauts have arrived in Cologne, Germany for training at the European Astronaut Centre. They will receive 18 months basic training including Russian, the history of spaceflight, space engineering, human behaviour, flight training, the fundamentals of several scientific disciplines and other basics required for space flight.

The six new astronauts are:

  • Samantha Cristoforetti, from Milan, Italy.
  • Alexander Gerst, from Künzelsau, Germany.
  • Andreas Mogensen, from Copenhagen, Denmark.
  • Luca Parmitano, from Paternò, Italy.
  • Timothy Peake, from Chichester, UK.
  • Thomas Pesquet, from Rouen, France.
