Sun halo in the Times

Ice crystals in the atmosphere have a nice habit of producing wonderful rainbow effects. There are Sun dogs, circumzenithal arcs (shiny bits of the zenith – top – of the circumference of a halo) and in exceptional circumstances even glories. At this time of year, high altitude cirrus clouds and icy temperatures mean ice crystals make their way down to UK latitudes and put on an occasional show. We’ve seen the Sun dog destroyed by the SDO launch, and now even the Times is picking up on occasional halos, like the one below:
