Partying like it’s 1961

In a fortnight’s time on April 10th, Yuri’s night will be on us again. Yuri’s night is a global celebration of the events of April 12th 1961 when Yuri Gagarin became the first man in space. It typically takes the form of parties being arranged across the globe. The 2010 party map can be found here and a search of google should reveal websites dedicated to the more regular parties.

One particular celebration, based around NASA’s Ames research laboratory, will feature a four storey tall mocked up rocket with three levels of stuff inside to view, designed to look as if it jumped from the pages of a science fiction comic strip at the time of Gagarin’s trip. The Bay Area celebration is expected to host ten thousand people with dancers, art, technical exhibits and speakers.

This is of course a bay in California, not the Morecambe Bay area…
