20 years (and one day) since Hubble was deployed

It is now twenty years and a day since the deployment of the Hubble Space Telescope in the space shuttle mission STS-31. As well as a bit of coverage in the papers, there are different ways that the milestone has been celebrated. The Hubble team themselves have released a new image of the Carina Nebula. The Discovery website has put up a slideshow of the best Hubble images of 2009 as well as a rundown of Hubble’s first two decades. The BBC’s Science Correspondent, Jonathan Amos, has written down his memories of the deployment and the BBC has an ‘audio slideshow’ on the matter too. Galaxy Zoo, the citizen science website that allows members of the public to classify galaxies, has augmented its Sloan Digital Sky Survey data with new Hubble images. Astronomy Now magazine is readvertising its Hubble Reborn supplement, first put out to coincide with the last Hubble Servicing Mission. The European Hubble team have set up a new website (NASA already has this website) that includes such things as a hunt for Hubble images in everyday life as well as a celebratory story on their news page. Meanwhile NASA’s twitter feed has been doing a rundown of Hubble’s Greatest Discoveries. These, according to the feed, were:
