…come electricity grid destroying storms!

Images taken by the Atmospheric Imaging Assembly (AIA) instrument aboard the Solar Dynamics Observatory (SDO) have shown how small events on the solar surface create ‘ripples’ that spread out to destabilise larger areas, leading to more devastating explosions on the solar surface. The properties of the Alfven waves are determined by the density and composition of the stuff they’re travelling through, providing a probe into the solar surface.
