Solar sail satellite takes a self portrait

Ikaros, the solar sail technology testbed run jointly by JAXA and the Planetary Society, has successfully unfurled its wings according to images taken by a camera deployed by the satellite.The satellite, which also has an ion engine and superthin solar panels, spun out its sail. Will be the first solar sail craft to operate outside of Earth orbit and will be testing techniques to cut a path through the solar system borne by radiation from the Sun.
